RESIDENTS of Modupe Ayoade street, and Araromi street, among other neighbouring areas in Iyana-Ipaja, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, have lamented the poor power supply and excessive billings of the electricity distribution company, Ikeja Electric, in their communities.

Punch reports that residents alongside business owners in the affected areas say that repeated complaints made to Ikeja Electric to resolve the situation in the affected areas had been ignored, as they now have to pay high electrical bills to the electricity distribution company, yet receiving poor power supply.

A restaurant operator on Araromi Street, Shola Adesokan, while speaking with a correspondent of Punch said the lack of regular power supply in the area had been affecting her business.

“They (Ikeja Electric) always take light in our area and as you can see, this area contains both residential and business buildings. Storing foodstuffs in the freezer for me is just a waste of time because if you don’t have a generator, the foodstuffs would get spoiled in a matter of days. Electricity is just not consistent here.

“Ikeja Electric should endeavour to give us constant power supply because we need it. Imagine, we only have power supply for four hours in a day and sometimes, for two weeks, we won’t have power supply,” she said.

A 67-year-old retiree, Afolayan Sunday, whose residence is located on Ayoade Street, urged the distribution company to improve power supply in the area.

He said, “In a day, we may just have power for three to four hours but we enjoy more hours of power supply when it is getting towards the end of the month. This is usually because they are getting ready for disconnection exercises at various houses and business centres in the area."

Speaking further, a welder in the area, Gabriel Ayopo, lamented the amount residents and business owners had been spending on purchasing petrol and diesel to power their generators.

He said “The poor power supply that we are experiencing in Ayoade, Araromi and environs is killing our businesses. I am a welder and I need power but since it is not readily available, we all know how much diesel costs now.

“It is affecting businesses here. I spend over #80, 000 to purchase diesel to power my generator every month because of my business. After paying our monthly electricity bill, I doubt if we will get anything close to a four-day power supply. IE should improve our supply.”

The spokesperson, IE, Felix Ofulue, had yet to respond to calls and a text message sent to his mobile phone regarding the plights of the residents.
