HALIFAX, N.S. — HMCS Harry DeWolf is returning to port in Halifax after a failed voyage to join a mission in the Canadian Arctic because of problems with the vessel's diesel generator.

The Royal Canadian Navy confirmed in a social media post Friday that one of the ship's four main diesel generators failed on Wednesday, forcing it to divert back to Halifax.

On August 17 2022 while en route to join the maritime task component of Operation NANOOK 2022, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Harry DeWolf’s suffered a failure in one of their four main diesel generators, requiring the ship to divert back to Halifax, Nova Scotia. 🧵(1/3) pic.twitter.com/Z1AltXFmF9

The vessel was en route to join HMCS Margaret Brooke and HMCS Goose Bay for a two-month deployment in the Arctic as part of Operation Nanook, a Canadian-led maritime multinational exercise.

Navy officials said the failure was an isolated incident and did not affect any of the ship’s crew members or outside systems.

The navy said the ship will undergo an immediate assessment and repairs, and there is no impact on the ongoing northern mission.

It's not the first time HMCS Harry DeWolf has had issues at sea.

The Royal Canadian Navy’s first new warship in more than two decades had problems with its military communications system during sea trials in October 2020, which left the crew communicating with navy brass ashore using the onboard wifi. It also had trouble producing fresh water with the reverse osmosis system within the same timeframe.

At the time, Harry DeWolf “received support returning sufficient military communications however experienced some mechanical issues with their motor diesel generator cooling systems," a navy spokesperson said.
