Aggreko, the world’s biggest developer of mobile and modular power solutions, has announced the successful implementation of a remote power project utilizing their virtual pipeline power technology. Labyrinth Resources Limited was able to finish a difficult mining exploration project while lowering CO2 emissions and fuel costs thanks to the approach.

For a five-month gold mining exploratory project, Labyrinth Resources required remote electricity. The site is in a harsh, rural position on the Quebec–Ontario border, with no access to grid power.

Temperatures in the area can drop to −30 °C. Aside from the exceptionally low temperatures, the exorbitant cost of diesel fuel was also a source of concern. Labyrinth Resources required a portable power solution that could function in the challenging climate of the site while employing a better fuel source.

Aggreko evaluated the situation and proposed a virtual pipeline power system to provide compressed natural gas (CNG). The company installed two 300 kW natural gas generators and a 60 kW diesel generator to handle peak loads when constructing a CNG power plant. The virtual pipeline approach permitted more efficient CNG distribution using 48-foot containers trucked to the mine site.

The Aggreko virtual pipeline power solution lowered CO2 emissions by about 75 tons versus diesel generators, cut NOx emissions by 10 tons, and saved over $300,000 in fuel expenses during its five-month operation. This enabled the customer to invest more resources in mining exploration while reducing emissions significantly to meet local standards and avoid fines.

We appreciate the support of the Aggreko team. The selection of a lower-emission fuel source for our power requirements aligns with Labyrinth Resources ESG policies and reinforces that sustainable solutions for our operations are decision drivers, as opposed to afterthoughts.

Geoff Bland, Product Manager for Power Generation and Energy Storage at Aggreko states, “At Aggreko, we have deep experience in powering remote locations and providing clean CNG power. Our equipment and engineers were fully capable of dealing with harsh conditions and reducing emissions.”

The mining industry is undergoing an energy transition as it moves towards integrating renewable and alternative fuel solutions. The Aggreko virtual pipeline power solution allowed the customer to get the job done faster, more cost-effectively, and with a significant reduction in emissions.
