Knit polos have taken Hollywood by storm. Hardly a week goes by without a scene-stealing cameo from Tinseltown’s shirt du jour, which cropped up on so many press junkets this spring it deserves an honorary SAG award. But here’s the rub: the knit polos favored by the A-list tend to skew pretty bold—kaleidoscopic mash-ups designed to invite maximum eyeballs on the red carpet. They’re not exactly average Joe-friendly, especially if your 9 to 5 involves less kicking ass on the big screen, and more kicking ass on Microsoft Teams. That, dear reader, is where Uniqlo’s mercifully pared-down riff comes into play. And if you were on the fence about blowing your Sweetgreen budget on a shirt you’d be anxious to dribble beet juice all over, the good news doesn’t end there: at 50 bucks a pop, each of 'em cost less than a week’s worth of wilted desk salads.

Since setting up shop stateside, Uniqlo’s carved out a niche hawking quiet, unobtrusive basics cut from a roster of deceptively luxe fabrics. Insanely affordable selvedge denim? Absolutely. Criminally underpriced houndstooth jackets? You bet. So when we say that the Japanese mega-retailer’s extra-fine, 19.5 micron Merino wool is ludicrously soft, we're not exaggerating: it’s cozier than any work-appropriate shirt has a right to be, and still looks killer under a gently-structured blazer.

Which brings us to the real clincher: its unimpeachable versatility. Because short of any shindig that demands knotting up a tie, there’s few places Uniqlo’s polo-sweater hybrid won’t look totally rad. Impromptu Raya hang, late-afternoon coffee run, your cousin’s bar-mitzvah, wherever: its just-trim-enough cut and svelte collar will work in tandem to class up the occasion considerably. The only real downside? Should you happen to wander onto a red carpet, a horde of unbearably peppy, mic-wielding pundits will probably mistake you for somebody famous—and they’ll definitely ask for an ID on the shirt.
