Local gas-to-power specialist partners with Italian Pramac to introduce clean and quiet standby gas to power

Sustainable Power Generation, a Cape Town-based company that provides energy solutions in rugged, secure containerised systems, continues to show its mettle in these challenging times. Over the last few years, SustainPower has actively made innovative contributions into natural gas and biogas power generation.

However, with grid power availability being a thing of uncertainty in South Africa, SustainPower has extended its focus from large-scale industrial and commercial gas to power solutions, to now include gas standby power solutions for homes and business who are feeling the impact of loadshedding.

PRAMAC, an Italian-American company established in 1966, that is today part of GENERAC – an American market leader - manufactures a wide range of power generation equipment and other engine powered products, and is SustainPower’s partner in providing South African homes and SMEs with ultra-quiet power backup gas-to-power generators.

“Better than diesel, and not just for commercial use,” says Ames Martin, SustainPower’s COO, “Pramac generators offer quiet and clean alternative to the traditional diesel and petrol generators normally found. The best part is that they connect directly to the gas supply that a home or restaurant is already using for cooking, heating, etc.”

Gas and diesel engines have similar consumption rates, and the diesel and LPG fuels have similar prices; however, for homes and small to medium businesses like restaurants who are impacted by loadshedding, the LPG option has clear advantages due to its cleanliness, and the fact that homes and restaurants have the LPG installation already in place.

However, residential and commercial areas with natural gas supply enjoy an even great benefit, as prices are significantly lower, and fuel supply becomes a non-issue due to the continuous availability of gas.

Says Ames, “Adding a small, quiet gas generator is a simple process. The SustainPower standby product line starts at 8kVA and goes to 500kVA. The residential and commercial generators use small, air-cooled engines made in the USA by Generac, so the maintenance is minimal, and much cleaner than a liquid-cooled diesel engine.”

Breaking out of the more traditional sector for biogas, and into the commercial and industrial space, and leading the way in innovation, as well as partnering with a market leader for standby power solutions in the domestic sector, SustainPower offers a viable, sustainable solution to keeping the lights on this year.
